The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Context of Sentencing

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
